The Hedgehog and the Fox: What's the Point of History? (NEW)

Francis Bacon thought “histories make men wise” while Hegel claimed that “people and governments never have learned anything from history”. Is either statement true? Certainly mass market history is an entertainment that most of us enjoy. We generally believe that we share a common national heritage but is that heritage what we have been taught rather than what actually happened? Do we know what “actually happened”? Some believe that there should be a historical adviser in each Whitehall department but Khrushchev considered historians to be dangerous people, upsetting things with their questions and challenges. We shall debate the historian's craft and try to conclude whether it is possible to define history. We shall explode some persistent myths, consider academic and populist historical writing and the influence of film and drama.

Psychology of Human Attachment

Almost everyone would say that they've been in a loving relationship at some time.  In the modern West we often assume that love is something that we 'fall into' but that is not the view of all societies.  On this course we will look at customs of dating, courting and loving.  Research shows that attachment relationships formed during the earliest years of life are crucial to the way we form relationships later in life.  But is this link inevitable?  Could there be room for creativity and initiative?  Explore these questions and more.

Romanticism and Music

The 19th century has provided us with most of the popular classics heard in the concert hall today. This course will try to get into the Romantic mind and examine the place of music in 19th-century culture. Symphonies, operas and chamber works by Beethoven, Chopin, Berlioz, Verdi, Brahms and Tchaikovsky will be heard, enjoyed and discussed. The course is non-technical and an ability to read music is not necessary. It will cater for all tastes - whether you are a performer, a frequent concert-goer and listener or someone seeking an introduction to some of the greatest music ever written.
